The Macon County Ambulance Service was established in 1972 by the Macon County Legislative Body.  The ambulance service is a direct entity of Macon County Government.

On October 1, 1997, the name was changed to Macon County Emergency Medical Service (EMS).  Macon County EMS is the primary pre-hospital emergency medical care provider and transportation service for Macon County.

Macon County EMS maintains six ambulances.  Three ambulances are staffed 24 hours per day, and the other three ambulances are used as back-up units when necessary.  Macon County EMS provides Advanced Life Support Services (ALS) as well as Basic Life Support Services (BLS).  All six ambulances are ALS equipped.

Macon County EMS has three ambulance stations strategically located in Macon County.  The main office is located in Lafayette.  There is a substation on the east side of the county in Red Boiling Springs, and there is a substation on the west side of the county in the Eulia community.

Macon County EMS maintains 26 staff positions:

20 Ambulance Attendants.
4 Full-time Dispatchers.
1 EMS Secretary.
1 Director.

Macon County EMS' personnel roster consists of over 50 full-time and part-time personnel combined.  Macon County EMS Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT/IV) are provided with the latest equipment and the highest level of training.

Macon County has an ideal EMS system and is an integral part of the Emergency Services for Macon County, the City of Lafayette and the City of Red Boiling Springs.

Air Evac Lifeteam

Air Evac Lifeteam operates approximately 40 helicopters around the southeast.  Each helicopter is staffed with three professionals: a pilot, a flight nurse and a paramedic.  There are four helicopters operating in Tennessee.

In the event of a serious injury or illness, patients can be transported by helicopter to a major hospital or trauma center in cities such as Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Jackson, Memphis, etc.

Air Evac Lifeteam serves mostly rural areas such as Macon County.  They are available 24/7 and are dispatched from a central location in Missouri.  Local EMS crews simply call an 800 number and the nearest helicopter is sent to the accident scene or where ever the patient is located.

The helicopter can fly between 120 MPH and 140 MPH and can easily reach all of Tennessee.  Air Evac Lifeteam uses Bell helicopters.  The helicopter carries the three crew members and one patient only.

Rural residents are invited to become members of the Air Evac Lifeteam program.  This helps support and expand the service.  It also provides your family with major cost savings in the event you ever need to use this service.   For details, please visit the Air Evac Lifeteam web site at: www.lifeteam.net.
